What are generic drugs, and why are they cheaper than brand-name ones?

According to recent FDA data, generic drugs account for about 45-50 percent of all prescription drug purchases in the United States.

Although it doesn’t bear the original trademark, a generic drug is a brand-name equivalent and looks slightly different. It is the same medicine with the same active ingredients, identical in use, safety, strength, and all other characteristics in all other ways.

There is, however, another significant difference: the price. Generic drugs are noticeably cheaper than their branded counterparts.

This is easily explained by a number of marketing and production differences. Generic drug manufacturers do not need to spend massive amounts on scientific research and development, extensive clinical trials, and marketing campaigns.

The original manufacturer has already done all this, which reflects the brand-name drug’s price. Therefore, with generic drugs, we can see a 30-50% reduction in price and sometimes even save up to 80%.

Usually, generic products become available once the patent protections granted to the original manufacturer have expired. Also, some drugs never held patents, and in some countries, patents are not enforceable.

Are generic drugs safe? Effective?

The safety and effectiveness of generic drugs is established by the fact that all of them go through the SSA review and approval procedure.

Besides this thorough examination of the drug’s ingredients and performance, the SSA also conducts periodic inspections of the manufacturing plants to ensure no changes in the approved drug’s quality.

Quite often, generic drugs are manufactured by the same company that makes their brand-name counterparts.

It is crucial to remember that generic and brand-name drugs can look different.

This can occur due to the possible differences in their inactive ingredients, such as color and flavor additives. The copyright and trademark regulations do not allow for exact copies of the existing brand-name products.

These differences, however, do not affect the medical action of the drug.

Thus, anyone taking generic medications can rest with peace of mind, knowing that generic medicines are safe, effective, and fully approved by the FDA.
